Elle King – Elle King’s Three Thoughts on Spirits

Elle King – Three Thoughts on Spirits

Elle King is one of those artists who holds back nothing. When she rolls through a song, like her 2015 smash “Exe’s and Oh’s,” she’s giving 110%. That’s why people walk away from her shows shaking their heads and saying “holy sh!t.” When we had King in three years ago to explain her roots in our DSCVR interview, she told us that her mom says she came out screaming at birth and has always been an up-front person. From her teen days busking in Greenwich Village to tour dates with James Bay and Ed Sheeran, she reached audiences around the world with her mix of rock, country and alt. Her upcoming ‘Shake the Spirit’ album has some unusual inspirations. King says there’s no reason to be afraid of ghosts, and that spirits helped her formulate some of her work. you only need to hear “Good Thing Gone” once to understand the music is tinged with a gospel fervor. See how she describes opening up to something “bigger than ourselves” in our ‘Three Thoughts’ interview.

Ayo & Teo – Ay3 (Vevo Footnotes)

You know ’em from the ice on their wrist – as of today, Ayo & Teo’s “Rolex” video has clocked almost 500 million views since dropping last year. The dancer/singer duo, famous for their masks as well as their music, always get fans moving when they deliver a new track. Their latest, “Ay3,” was produced by BL$$D & Bixtel, and its vid was directed by Motion Family (who also did Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles”). Both feature Lil Yachty (fun fact: Yachty’s “1 Night” was the first song Ayleo and Mateo Bowles ever danced together to), and the guys have got a little dance challenge going with this one. Our “Footnotes” gives you lots of background info about the pair, the videos that inspired them, and Lil Yachty’s mom.

Albin Lee Meldau – Vevo Meets: Albin Lee Meldau

Vevo Meets Albin Lee Meldau

Albin Lee Meldau has been absorbing music all his life – mom is a jazz vocalist, dad favors punk. The Swedish singer-songwriter’s first instrument was the trumpet, but he started writing and playing songs in his teens, when he realized that it would bolster his self-expression AND earn some attention from women. He definitely chose the right path, because his voice is extraordinary. Its ghostly tone sets a deep mood, and on “Lou Lou” and “Persistence” you can hear the soul and church music influences he says have marked his approach. Ultimately, they blend to form something ethereal, commanding and new. “We sample the old to produce the future,” he has said. When Meldau’s ‘Lovers’ EP arrived late last year, impressive tracks such as “Let Me Go” grabbed lots of ears on Spotify and SoundCloud, earning him ‘Newcomer of the Year’ nomination from the Swedish Grammis. The new “Bloodshot” is a crushing breakup lament that finds him putting that powerhouse voice way up front. In our ‘Vevo Meets’ interview, he tells us about failing at being a football player, refining his performance skills by singing on the street, and being embarrassed by his father for the crime of “dad dancing.”

Ray BLK – Vevo Meets: Ray Blk

Ray BLK has been turning heads in the UK for a while now, and we’re hoping the rest of the world catches up quick – she’s a stunner. The Nigerian-born Rita Ekwere came up in the Catford section of London, was part of a band with MNEK as a teen, started writing music while in university, and found she had a real knack at mixing cultural pride and catchy hooks. She has profiled the diversity of her stomping ground in her “50/50” and “My Hood” videos. Both are part of her ‘Durt’ EP. She explains herself in ‘Vevo Meets,’ beaming when she recounts a recent career highlight: winning the BBC’s ‘Sound of 2017’ Award for new talent.

Hey Violet – :60 With

:60 Seconds With Hey Violet

Hey Violet is a new band with a long history. Singer Rena Lovelis, guitarist Miranda Miller, and drummer Nia Lovelis joined forces in middle school to form the all-female Cherri Bomb, which released an album in 2012 and opened for the likes of Foo Fighters and Smashing Pumpkins. After some personnel and stylistic changes, they re-emerged as Hey Violet (adding guitarist Casey Moreta and bassist Iain Shipp). In 2015 they signed with 5 Seconds of Summer’s label, Hi Or Hey Records, and dropped the killer “This Is Why.” Since then they’ve toured the world with 5SOS and have made a mark with “Break My Heart,” “Guys My Age,” and “Hoodie,” which can all be found on their just-released album, ‘From The Outside.’ In our ‘:60 With’ session with the quintet talked about mom jeans, boogers vs farts, and their favorite swear word.

Victoria La Mala – Vevo Meets: Victoria La Mala

Vevo Meets: Victoria La Mala

“If 2 Pac and Selena had a child, it would be me.” Victoria La Mala isn’t fooling around when she says that. The upstart Mexico City native brokers a blend of old and new in her music. The banda and conjunto she heard around her home as a child up are present in tracks such as “Vete Mucho,” but the flourish and sweep of modern pop are also in the air when La Mala let her vocals truly take off. Check the video for “Si Va a Dler Que Duela” for the way she addresses drama with that powerhouse voice of hers. Her ‘Vevo Meets’ fills us in on how she worked to get the music industry to notice her, and what it felt like to hear her song on the radio for the first time.
