Elusive Minke Whale Underneath Ice Caps

ID: 1501236

This scientist was left in a state of disbelief when she returned home from an Antarctic expedition to find out she may be the first to have captured a glimpse of the illusive minke whale swimming beneath the ice caps.

Spending several weeks surveying the killer whales of Antarctica, marine mammal expert Dr. Regina Eisert, from the University of Canterbury, said she was left an “excited scientist” when she loaded up the footage to be greeted by a profound sight.

Watching as a huge minke whale gracefully glide its way beneath the surface in the Ross Sea, Regina couldn’t believe her luck in capturing the perfect – and possibly first-ever – shot of the illusive mammal in its natural habitat.

Growing up to 10 meters in length and weighing nine tonnes, still relatively little is known about the minke whale.

Located in the Kalahari Desert of northern Botswana, the oasis is fed by Angola’s Cuito and Cubango Rivers. The delta is a wildlife paradise and home to many exotic animals like elephants, hippos, sitatungas, and African fish eagles. But the delta is in danger as Angola seeks to develop the upper reaches of the Cuito and Cubango. Increasingly, forests along the banks are being burned down for river access, hunting, and subsistence crops. With these growing pressures, the future of the delta is at stake. The Okavango Wilderness Project is rooted in this cause. National Geographic Society sponsored an intrepid expedition team to research and survey the headwaters and document the need to protect the ecosystem. This animated video will reveal some the team’s wildlife discoveries and the environmental concerns the delta faces—as well as the tricky business of conservation across political borders.

As temperatures rise, and sea ice melts, polar bears lose access to the main staple of their diet—seals. Starving, and running out of energy, they are forced to wander into human settlements for any source of food. Feeding polar bears is illegal. Without finding another source of food, this bear likely only had a few more hours to live.

Six weeks into their voyage, they were left stranded after their ship, the Endurance, was trapped and sunk by crushing pack ice. With no chance of rescue, the crew began an 18-month battle for survival in one of the most extreme environments on earth. Remarkably, every member of the 28-man crew survived the ordeal and their saga remains one of the world’s greatest adventure stories of human endurance and bravery.

Now, more than a hundred years later, filmmaker Glen Milner is journeying to the frozen southern waters to retrace the steps of this legendary adventurer. In Letters of Fire, take a visual odyssey through Antarctica’s unforgiving landscape as actor Dominic West brings to life the haunting journal entries of Shackleton’s doomed voyage.

The first film from the National Geographic Society documented the failed attempt of an expedition to reach the North Pole. The 1902 footage, capturing chaotic scenes from the Ziegler polar expedition, was filmed by a budding photographer named Anthony Fiola. The expedition’s leadership had more passion than experience, and the team never reached the North Pole. Fiala eventually led a second attempt but that failed as well. Although he wasn’t the first to reach the North Pole, Fiala has the honor of being National Geographic’s first “explorer-cinematographer.”

Located near the tip of the Antarctic peninsula, the volcano’s caldera acts as a safe harbor for humans and wildlife alike. Called Deception Island, it has erupted several times since humans first set foot in the region around 1820. Eruptions permanently closed Chilean and British research bases. Weather conditions can change rapidly, making tourism difficult.
